FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Is Sober Cool?

MEDIA CONTACT:
Donna Parker @ 210.545.7677

DALLAS, TX, April 12, 2007 — How do you make staying sober ‘cool’ during America’s biggest teen party season? BuzzFree Prom, part of a cause-marketing effort dedicated to teen safety and responsible behavior, announces its successful third year of offering safe alternatives to substance abuse and driving. BuzzFree is taking off in markets across the country, including Colorado, where BuzzFree is endorsed by the State PTA. Communities are encouraged to tailor it to their town’s needs, such as the case with Deming, New Mexico.

County DWI Prevention Program Director, Claudia Pena contacted BuzzFree to customize the program for her town.

"Our students were an accident waiting to happen," Peņa. "They would head across the border to the Mexican border town of Palomas to drink and party leaving 1,200 high school students to make the 30-minute drive back, most under the influence," says Pena.

"We adopted BuzzFree Prom three years ago which attracted numerous prom-goers.

"This year’s BuzzFree event will be the biggest ever. We found that even kids who planned to drink were positively influenced by the BuzzFree Prom program," stated Pena.

BuzzFree begins messaging with powerful posters and a DVD which encourage responsible teen behavior. Students who sign the BuzzFree pledge to remain sober are rewarded with a BuzzFree Prom ID and this year, BuzzFree is working with Claire’s and Sally Beauty Supply which will offer ‘BuzzFreebies’ to students.

"There are numerous organizations preaching zero tolerance for teens, but BuzzFree distinguishes itself as program that acknowledges and praises responsible choices that begin with signing a BuzzFree Prom Pledge," says Orchard. "Our strategy is to create more reasons to make smart choices. You know, make the grass greener on the sober side. In return for their positive behavior, BuzzFree teens are rewarded with prom merchandise discounts in local communities that adopt the program."

"In our drive to be a relevant positive force for today’s teens, we have just produced our latest reality-based DVD showcasing real teens with relevant substance-abuse issues who have turned their lives around and now provide positive directions for other teens," says Orchard. "In addition, our posters, now available in Spanish, as well as English, feature graphic depictions of consequences when teens drink or use other drugs."

Teen Newsweek - Perspectives Q&A April 18, 2005 - Teen Newsweek

Miss Teen USA, 18-year-old Shelley Hennig, has traveled the country warning kids about the dangers of underage drinking. In 2001, Shelley's brother, Brad, 18, was killed in a drunk driving crash. She has teamed with BuzzFree Prom, a program that urges teens to celebrate the prom without alcohol or drugs. Shelley, a high school senior in Destrehan, LA., recently spoke to TEEN NEWSWEEK.

BuzzFreeŽ and Miss Teen USAŽ Kick Off a BuzzFree Prom Season
Dallas (March 28, 2005)

Shelley Hennig, Miss Teen USA kicks off the 2005 BuzzFree Prom season. This positive peer-pressure program encourages teens to abstain from using alcohol and drugs on prom night.

Miss Teen USA, 17-year-old Shelley Hennig, is this year’s spokesperson for the BuzzFree program and has a critical interest urging teens to stay safe on prom night. Shelley’s teenaged brother was killed in a drunk-driving crash three years ago in Louisiana.

"I only hope that by speaking out about my brother, I can save the lives of other teenagers. As we prepare for prom, we must remember that how we look is not the most important thing. It is more important to be true to yourself and your beliefs and celebrate prom safely without drugs or alcohol," said Hennig. "If teens are worried about peer pressure, they should have an answer ready if someone offers them alcohol or drugs…and that answer should always be, ‘No."

BuzzFree Prom is designed to encourage and reward responsible behavior by teens during Prom and many other youth events throughout the year. When teens sign the pledge not to drink or do drugs, they will be entitled to discounts on prom-related merchandise and activities. The BuzzFree Prom program is currently being implemented in high schools across the country.

"Teenagers know that prom will be the biggest and most costly night of their lives. They will spend millions of dollars on the right apparel and make-up," says Liza Orchard, founder of Program. "We’re asking that they spend time organizing their prom activities around safe driving. With some advance planning, young people can have the night of their lives without risking their life."

Some Important BuzzFree Prom Tips:

  1. Choose your chauffeur carefully—never ride with someone who’s been drinking.
  2. Buckle up
  3. Be organized—plan your evening ahead of time and let your parents in on your plans
  4. Looks aren’t everything—make sure you trust your date—someone who plans to be safe, just like you!
  5. Be in charge—protect yourself on prom night—staying in control will make you glad you did.

Alcohol is the No. 1 youth drug problem, killing more young people than all of the other illicit drugs combined. Last year, more than 17,000 people were killed in alcohol-related car crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Many of those deaths involve teens driving to and from prom activities. Of the crashes that occur during prom season, 63.9 percent are alcohol related.

Community and school leaders interested in conducting a BuzzFree Prom in their school or community should visit www.buzzfreeprom.com or call 877-406-1286.

Shelley Hennig - Miss Teen USAŽ2004

No one was more shocked than Shelley Hennig of Destrehan, Louisiana when she heard her name called as MISS TEEN USAŽ 2004 on August 6th in Palm Springs, California. This 18-year-old high school senior had a lot to talk about when she returned to school from her summer break with her new Mikimoto tiara.

With dreams of succeeding in fashion or commercial print, Shelley’s first goal is to finish high school and attend New York University in New York City. In the meantime, this honor student and Senior Class Representative has been named an Academic Excellence Student at Destrehan High School.

Her long list of extra-curriculum activities includes modeling, writing, art, choreography, traveling and shopping, but Shelley’s first love is dance. "I have been dancing since I was 2-years-old, and there is no better way for me to express myself than through this art!" says Hennig. Shelley is also an accomplished poetry writer with two poems published in Young Authors Book of Poetry.

The youngest of three children, Shelley enjoyed being protected by both her older brothers - Glenn and Brad - until a drunk driving crash claimed Brad’s life at age 18 three years ago. Shelley, now an advocate against under-age drinking, began working with a local Louisiana non-profit organization called 'C.A.D.A' (Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse) where she shares her family’s story of tragedy and speaks out to her peers regarding the use of alcohol and drugs. "There are some disasters you can not avoid, but it can only take one drink to change your entire future! My brother Brad is proof of that." Shelley tells the students she addresses during school visits.

Shelley will spend her year as a youth advocate focusing on self-esteem issues, anti-violence and anti-drug campaigns. She will work to affect change with organizations such as Seeds of Peace, D.A.R.E., Sparrow Clubs (a national non-profit organization of school-based clubs that assist children in medical crisis), and SHiNE (Seeking Harmony in Neighborhoods Everyday), organizations committed to opening dialogues with today’s youth about the importance of communicating to create safe living, educational and social environments.
