parentsguide to a buzzfree post-prom partyTo all you parents/guardians out there encouraging those whom you love to have an alcohol- and drug-free post-prom party, here are some ideas that could help you help them make their night memorable. Guests First of all, encourage your kids to invite a wide range of personalities. This way everyone has someone to hang out with and they are less likely to leave for another party that might not be as safe. Activities Also, help plan activities that include everyone. With all the fun to be had, who wants to use drugs and alcohol? Money Who's going to pay for this party? If it's out of your pocket, you'll have more control over what goes on. You might even make a deal to match the amount the Prom-goers save. After all, the money spent is a small price to pay for the well-being of your Prom Kings and Queens. The Law Even though you may consider your home a safe place for those who choose to drink, condoning the use of alcohol is a bad idea. It is illegal to serve alcohol to people under the age of 21 in your home or anywhere else. Adults who provide alcohol to someone underage can face up to a year in jail and fines up to $4,000, according to the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission. A Watchful Eye Keep an eye on the party. You don't need to be there all of the time. Just check in to see how things are going. If you notice or have reason to believe that some of the partygoers are under the influence of an illegal substance, ask a peer to bring that person to you and the matter can be dealt with in private. Acknowledgement The choice to be alcohol- and drug-free isn't always easy. Acknowledge the great and responsible choice that your Prom Kings and Queens made. Dialogue Encourage your partiers to discuss their plans for the evening so everything is clear and everyone is comfortable. |
